The Ashanti Regional chapter of the Ghana National Association of Teachers GNAT, have undertaken a walk for peace ahead of this year’s December polls.
The walk which started from Suame roundabout, through Abrepo Junction, Bantama high street, Adum, Asafo and ended at the regional secretariat of the Ghana Education Service at Amakom was embarked by the regional leadership of GNAT and followed by other numerous members of the teacher association.
The regional president for the association, Prosper Takyi, when speaking to the media stated that, as part of this year’s World Teachers Day observation, they decided to walk for peace to draw attention of electorates and the various political party leadership to the need for peace maintenance before, during and after the election.
According to him, even pastors, prophets, and chiefs, labour unions and others are witnessing division or discrepancies with various prophecies, comments, strike actions, etc, as the election approaches.
Mr. Takyi added that the teacher union don’t want a situation where this year’s polls will turn into a tit-for-tat affair. Hence, the need for the peace walk.
He also called on all the various political parties to accept whoever immerges as winner and accept defeat with good hearts
Mr. Evans Tematey, who is a National Council Member and Chairman for Manya Krobo, of GNAT also added he joined forces to the Ashanti Regional chapter just to campaign for peace.
Finally, the Human Resource Manager for the Ghana Education Service in the Ashanti Region, Michael Osei who received the teachers after their walk encouraged them to always preach for peace from now till the end of the elections.
