ILLEGAL MINING CRACKDOWN: Amansie South Task Force Destroys Equipment Worth Thousands
In a bold move to combat illegal mining, the Amansie South District Small Scale Mining Task Force has destroyed chanfang machines and pumping equipment used by illegal miners on local rivers.
The joint operation, involving the Amansie South District Assembly, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Ghana Police Service, Immigration, National Investigation Bureau (NIB), and the media, targeted illegal mining sites along rivers in the district.
“This action demonstrates our commitment to protecting Ghana’s water bodies,” said a task force spokesperson.
The destruction of equipment is part of the government’s renewed efforts to rid river bodies of illegal mining activities, which have severely polluted water sources in the region.
Licensed small-scale miners have been urged to take a more active role in fighting illegal mining, with the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) chairman, Mr. Kwaku Abonee, emphasizing their vested interest in protecting the environment.
Traditional authorities have also been called upon to prevent foreign nationals from engaging in illegal mining practices.
The fight against galamsey continues, with stakeholders advocating for stronger collaboration to ensure lasting results.
