A/R Improving Cocoa Farming: COCOBOD Educates Farmers On Hand Pollination, Pruning

The Ghana COCOBOD has educated cocoa farmers on how to improve their farming activities or yields by the application of hand pollination and pruning.

The C.E.O for the Ghana COCOBOD, Joseph Boahen Aidoo, has urged cocoa farmers to apply hand pollination and pruning to their farming activities to improve their harvest or yields annually.

According to him, farmers who apply such acts end up harvesting more produces as compared to those who don’t.

Mr. Aidoo made this plea during a day training of farmers on hand pollination and pruning methods in Obuasi of the Ashanti Region.

He said farmers didn’t know about hand pollination untill this Akufo-Addo government introduced.

“We have farmers who followed the various teachings that I have made the past 8-years and now, I tell you they are enjoying heavy yields.”

“I tell you, farmers are making about 41 bags per an acre. Traditionally, in Ghana the average yield was 450 kilograms per hector which means many farmers were doing not more than 3 bags per acre. But currently they are doing 800 kilograms per hector, which means that currently our farmers are doing better. But we have exceptional ones who are doing 4000 kilograms per hector”.

The CEO urged all cocoa farmers to embrace the pruning and hand pollination as well as ignoring the burning of their farm lands before cultivating.
