C/R ECG Reports 36 Cases Of Transformer Vandalism And Conductor Cable Theft In The Central Region

The Central Regional Office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has expressed grave concerns over the frequent vandalism of transformers and theft of conductor cables, which are severely disrupting power supply to businesses, homes, and other establishments.

According to the Regional Office, from January to November 2024, Kasoa North and South recorded the highest number of incidents, followed by the Cape Coast district.

Speaking to the media at the regional office in Cape Coast, Engr. Emmanuel Lumor, General Manager of ECG, stated that investigations reveal unknown individuals vandalize and disconnect active transformers from poles, drop them to the ground, and remove copper components.

He further noted that unknown individuals cut active overhead line conductor cables in quiet or isolated areas and steal them away.

Meanwhile, the Regional Manager mentioned the affected areas and added that there is an average of two reported cases per week.

Areas where transformers have been vandalized include the Bronyibima enclave, Nkanfoa, Sanka, Essanman, and recently, another was destroyed at Bronyibima.

Engr. Lumor inducted that, a total cost of over 1.864,Million Ghana Cedis has been incurred to rectify the faults within this period.

He urges the public to assist in combating this menace by reporting suspects to the police and encourages communities to form watch groups.
