Aowin Chiefs And Priests Unite To Combat Galamsey Through Spiritual And Regulatory Measures

The Aowin Traditional Area is facing severe environmental destruction due to galamsey, or illegal mining. Water bodies and forest reserves have been significantly affected, despite ongoing efforts to curb the menace.

Early 2025, the Aowin Traditional Council, led by chiefs, fetish priests, and priestesses, conducted spiritual ceremonies to warn illegal miners and call for divine intervention.

These rituals included pouring libations, reciting incantations, and making appeals to the gods to protect the land.

Building on this spiritual action, the council has implemented strict new measures to ensure environmental sustainability:

1. Small-scale miners must present authorization documents from the Minerals Commission for verification.

2. Verified miners are required to sign a formal commitment to safeguard water bodies and forest reserves in the area.

At a news conference ,the Chief of Nkwanta, Nana Ntow III, emphasized the importance of these steps, urging all stakeholders to respect traditional authorities and prioritize the preservation of natural resources for future generations.
