Seafarers in Tema have petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to urgently overhaul leadership within key maritime institutions to help address unemployment in the sector.
Says this has resulted in high unemployment and a decline in the sector’s economic potentials.
A senior member of the association, *Michael Teye Topey* , lamented the high cost of documentation renewal and the limited job opportunities for Ghanaian seafarers, despite the country having a highly trained workforce.
The Association’s President, *Captain Thomas Eklu* , expressed optimism about President Mahama’s 24-hour maritime economy policy.
He believes ,with the right leadership in place, the policy could revamp the industry, boost national revenue, and create employment for the many skilled but jobless seafarers.
