A young man in his late thirties has lost his life after being electrocuted while attempting to steal a cable at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) substation at Adoato in the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025, and has resulted in an outage affecting many customers in Greater Kumasi and beyond.
This is not the first time the Adoato substation has been targeted by cable thieves.
In a previous incident, the thieves successfully made away with cables, compromising the stability of the power supply in the area.
The recent electrocution serves as a grim reminder of the risks involved in such illegal activities.
Speaking in an exclusive phone interview with Sompa Fm Bawah Baidoo, Mr Benjamin Obeng Antwi, ECG’s Public Relations Officer for Ashanti West, the incident is part of a growing trend of vandalism targeting ECG installations in the region.
Obeng Antwi cautioned the public against such illegal activities, emphasizing that they not only disrupt power supply but also pose a significant risk to life.
The ECG is appealing to the public to help protect its installations by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or contacting them through their hotline 0302611611, the ECG PowerApp, or social media.
The company urges anyone with information about cable theft or vandalism to come forward and assist in preventing such incidents in the future.
