Rice Farmers In Shama Receive Major Boost As MP Donates Harvester And Supplies

Rice farmers in the Shama Constituency have received a significant boost as Member of Parliament Emelia Arthur donated a GH¢1.3 million combined harvester, a tractor, and various farming inputs including wellington boots, motorized sprayers, and fertilizers.

The gesture, which fulfills a key campaign promise by the MP, is aimed at enhancing local agricultural productivity, especially rice and cocoa farming, in the area.

The donation was made at a short but impressive ceremony held at Ohiamadwen in the Western Region.

The equipment and supplies are expected to improve yield and ease the burden on smallholder farmers in the constituency.

Hon. Emelia Arthur, who also serves as the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, emphasized the importance of supporting farmers to increase food production and contribute to national development.

Speaking to our reporter Nana fynn she stated, “Farmers in the Shama Constituency contribute significantly to our local economy and the national GDP. My office is committed to continuously supporting them so they can increase their yields and livelihoods.”

She encouraged the farmers to put the donated equipment to good use for their own benefit and the development of the area.

She again urged cocoaboard to add Shama as a cocoa district because is a cocoa growing area and majority of the farmers are into cocoa farming.

District Chief Executive of Shama, Paul Denis Otis Dentu, who was also present at the event, commended the MP’s effort and reiterated the assembly’s commitment to working closely with her office to further support farmers.

He lamented the decline in the agricultural sector due to lack of resources and stressed the need for continued investment.

“Agriculture, when done well, can transform lives and support national growth,” he said.

The donation also seeks to revive interest in the Inland Irrigation Project initiated by the previous NDC government on the Whin River, which was disrupted by illegal mining activities.

The intervention is seen as a timely one, bringing renewed hope to farmers in Shama.
