A bus transporting 63 passengers, including recent graduates from the University of Education, Winneba, was swept away by the overflowing River Okye at Assin Edubease in the Assin South District, following nearly four hours of heavy rainfall.
The passengers onboard included pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, and several young men and women.
According to information gathered by Rich FM and Angel FM/TV’s Shadrack Owusu Asante, the bus was traveling from the University of Education’s Winneba Campus in the Central Region to Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region, carrying students who had just attended their graduation ceremony.
The River Okye had overflowed its banks when the bus attempted to cross, leading to the harrowing incident.
The situation triggered an immediate emergency response by the Ghana National Fire Service, the police, and the ambulance service.
Their swift and coordinated efforts led to the successful rescue of all 63 passengers, with no casualties reported.
Speaking to Shadrack Owusu Asante, Fire Officer A.D.O I Ebenezer Armah, the leader of the rescue team, detailed how the events unfolded and praised the teamwork that ensured the passengers’ survival.
Meanwhile, some of the rescued passengers also recounted their terrifying experiences.
