A former national president of the Ghana Medical Association, GMA, Dr. Kwabena Opoku Adusei has called for improved sanitation and environmental hygiene, particularly in rural communities, as the best proactive measure against the outbreak of cholera, especially as the major rasets in.
According to him, the primary cause of cholera and typhoid is the intake of contaminated water and food, a condition that is preventable but deadly.
Dr. Opoku Adusei, who is also a former medical superintendent of the Tema General Hospital, gave the advice at Nintin in the Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti region at a community durbar
The durbar was the climax of a three-day programme to mobilize residents and citizens home and abroad toward forging unity of purpose while raising funds for some self-help development projects.
It was organized by the Assembly Member and Unit Committee for the Nintin Electoral Area in collaboration with the traditional leadership of Nintin. Key among the self-help projects are a health centre with residential staff accommodation and a school-based ICT centre to encourage the study of information technology among pupils of all the four primary and junior high schools in the town.
A certified building contractor, Mr. Adams Akuamoah Frimpong, who was chairman of the event, explained to the people the need for the Health Centre and why they must come together to ensure its completion within the shortest possible time.
A former national president of the Ghana Medical Association, GMA, Dr. Kwabena Opoku Adusei, who is also a citizen of Nintin and an initiator the ICT centre project, advocated for the provision of health care facilities in many parts of the country to guarantee easy access to, and quality primary healthcare for people, especially in rural areas.
Dr. Opoku Adusei, who is also a former Director of the Kintampo Health Research Centre, called for improved sanitation and environmental hygiene particularly as the major rainy season sets in, to avoid the outbreak of cholera in the town.
The Queen mother of Nintin, Okyekyerekro (translated as he who builds a community), Anosowah, commended organizers of the programme.
She appealed for reconciliation among all the factions to help speed up the development of the community.
The Home 2025 Home Coming, Socialization, and Fund Raising durbar was on the theme: “Uniting for Nintin’s Development.”
