Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Hospital Faces Critical Staffing Shortages, Administrator Appeals For Immediate Government Intervention
The Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Hospital in Ghana’s Central Region is grappling with severe understaffing, which is significantly hindering its ability to deliver effective healthcare services.
Dr. Peter Tetteh, the hospital’s administrator, has made an urgent appeal to the government for the recruitment of permanent medical personnel and the provision of essential resources to address the crisis.
Commissioned on November 27, 2020, the 160-bed facility was intended to serve over 30,000 residents in the district and surrounding communities.
However, since its inauguration, the hospital has not received any new permanent staff appointments.
Dr. Tetteh highlighted the pressing need for various medical professionals, including paramedical staff, radiologists, sonographers, and specialists.
He also emphasized the necessity for critical infrastructural support, such as staff accommodations, a reliable power generator, service vehicles, an ambulance, and enhanced lighting around the hospital premises.
“The financial burden of hiring temporary staff is unsustainable and poses significant risks to our ability to provide timely and effective care,” Dr. Tetteh stated during a recent visit from Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Chief Executive, Hon. Isaac Yawson, and Hon. Hakim Addei, a member of the Central Regional Council of State.
In response, Hon. Isaac Yawson the newly appointed DCE assured that alternative solutions would be sought promptly to address the pressing issues facing the hospital.
He acknowledged the critical situation and committed to working closely with health authorities to find viable solutions.
Hon. Hakim Addae, Central Regional Council of state member also expressed his commitment to the hospital’s cause, pledging to engage with the Health Minister to advocate for permanent staffing solutions and adequate accommodations for hospital personnel.
