Traditional Leaders Condemn Attacks On Local Mining Company

Traditional leaders in Akatakyieso in the Amansie Central district,Ashanti region, have expressed deep concern over recent attacks on Mickey Mining Company, a locally licensed mining firm that employs many residents.

A team from National Security, led by the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, allegedly stormed the mining site, beating workers and arresting some.

Nana Nuako Nuamah,Chief of Akatakyieso, during his engagement with the media,described the action as “very bad” and emphasized that the mining firm is licensed by the Minerals Commission.

He believes that such attacks are not the best approach to combat illegal mining, especially when the government seeks traditional leaders’ support in the fight.

He urged the government to adopt a more proper approach to address issues of illegal mining rather than targeting citizens with the right to mine.

On his part, Nana Opoku Nyarko, Kontihene of Akatakyieso, condemn the action on how some people can use national security to attack workers of legal mining firm because their political party in government.

Mr Owusu Jones, Unit committee chairman for the community, also shared their situation with newsmen during the attacks and urged authorities to ensure that legitimate operators are protected and that peace is maintained in the community.
