Two Toddler Siblings Drown In Abandoned Pit At Assin Yaw Boamah

In a heartbreaking incident, two toddler siblings 4-year-old Kwame Cobbinah and 2-year-old Kwame Essiam have met their untimely deaths after drowning in an abandoned water-filled pit at Assin Yaw Boamah, near Assin Homaho in the Assin South District of the Central Region.

According to their grandmother, Agnes Baidoo, the pit was initially excavated by a community member who intended to use the mud for constructing a house and considered converting the pit into a toilet facility after the construction of the house. However, the pit accumulated stagnant water and was subsequently abandoned without any safety measures.

Kwame Essiam’s sandal fell into the water, and as he attempted to retrieve it, he slipped and fell in. His older brother, Kwame Cobbinah, tried to rescue him but also drowned.

The five-year-old companion attempted to help but was unsuccessful and ran home to seek assistance.

The Community members upon hearing the news rushed to the scene and managed to retrieve the children from the pit.

They were immediately transported to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu. Despite the medical team’s efforts, both children were pronounced dead on arrival.

The Assin South District Police Command confirmed the incident Rich FM and Angel’s News Shadrack Owusu Asante and stated that the bodies had been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Also, the parents of the deceased children, along with the individual who excavated the pit for the mud house, have been summoned by the police to assist with the ongoing investigation.
