The Ashanti regional executives of the Opposition New Patriotic Party have strongly criticized the government over what they described as targeted harassment of the party’s Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako Popularly known as Chairman Wontumi , the executives of the party alleged that since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed office on January 7, 2025, Bernard Antwi Boasiako has faced a pattern of politically motivated intimidation. claiming that such actions undermine democratic principles and are calling on President John Mahama to intervene and ensure the rule of law is upheld . Addressing a press conference at the party’s regional office in Kumasi , The regional secretary, Lawyer Adom Appiah , expressed concern over the arrest and detention of the party’s regional chairman, Chairman Wontumi. according to him the party believes that the Economic and organized Crime office EOCO has not followed due process in its handling of the case . emphasizing that the procedure employed in arresting Chairman Wontumi was questionable and the show of power he indicated was counter to good practices inherent in Democratic systems of law .
The NPP regional executives insist that if the government had legitimate concerns or charges against Antwi Boasiako or any other party member, it must pursue the matter through appropriate legal channels.
They warned against the use of force or intimidation to silence dissent, stressing that such conduct poses a threat to the nation’s democratic dispensation. he however called on President John Mahama to intervene And called for decency in the country’s Democratic dispensation .
Chairman Wontumi has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following his arrest on allegations of fraud, money laundering, and involvement in organised crime, according to the Attorney- General’s Department.
In protest, the Minority staged a walkout in Parliament and later organized a sit-down demonstration at EOCO’s headquarters on Thursday, May 29, 2025, accusing the investigative body of unfair treatment and political bias.
