Police Arrest 3 Chinese Nationals, Seize Weapons In Twifo Denyase Anti-Galamsey Operation

In a decisive move against illegal mining, the Central North Regional Police Command has apprehended three Chinese nationals engaged in unauthorized mining activities in the River Pra at Twifo Denyase, within the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region.

The operation, executed by a 25-member task force led by Regional Commander DCOP Abraham Acquaye, was initiated under the directive of Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

During the raid, the police seized two pump-action guns, 22 cartridges, and two excavators, and destroyed chanfan machines believed to be used in the illegal mining operations.

DCOP Acquaye in a press briefing explained that upon the arrival of the police, several Ghanaian accomplices fled the scene, some swimming across the river to evade capture.

However, the Chinese suspects were located and arrested in their residence.

This operation forms part of a broader initiative by the Central North Regional Police Command to combat illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”

Over a span of four days, the command has arrested 23 suspects involved in such activities and confiscated six excavators, along with other heavy mining equipment. Some equipment that could not be transported has been destroyed on-site to prevent further illegal use.

Despite these efforts, DCOP Acquaye highlighted challenges faced by the police, including interference from local political figures and influential individuals attempting to disrupt operations.

Additionally, the command has noted resource constraints, such as the need for bulletproof vests, life jackets, and vehicles, which are essential for the safety and effectiveness of their personnel.

Nevertheless, DCOP Acquaye reaffirmed the command’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining activities and ensuring the protection of Ghana’s natural resources.
