Ningo Community Faces Devastating Floods: Residents Blame Golden Star Resources Benso Mine, Call For Government Intervention

Residents of Ningo, a farming community near Benso in the Tarkwa Nsueam of the Western Region, are crying out for urgent government intervention following severe flooding they attribute to activities of Golden Star Resources’ Benso Mine.

According to the affected residents, the floods have been caused by the blockage of the Subri River.

They allege that the mining company has diverted the river’s natural flow and used mining waste to obstruct the watercourse.

As a result, the recent heavy rains have led to serious flooding in the area, submerging homes, farmlands, and businesses.

One of the most affected properties is a local sawmill, which has suffered extensive damage.

The owner, visibly distressed, described how years of investment have been lost within hours due to the rising waters.

“The whole area is underwater. My machines and wood are soaked and damaged. This is the only livelihood I have,” the sawmill operator lamented.

The situation has also affected nearby areas, including Watching Bay, where residents report similar levels of flooding.

Many in the area say their homes and small businesses have been damaged, and they are calling for immediate help to prevent further destruction.

“This flood is not only a Ningo problem anymore.

Watching Bay is also suffering. If the government doesn’t step in now, more communities will be affected,” a local resident warned.

In addition to the destruction of homes and businesses, the main road that leads to the community’s farmlands has also been completely flooded.

This has left many farmers stranded and unable to access their farms, raising concerns about food shortages and economic hardship in the weeks ahead.

“Our farms are now inaccessible. This road is the only way we can get to our crops. If this continues, we will have nothing to harvest and nothing to feed our families,” a farmer stated.
