Tensions Have Escalated In Elmina,Demanding Development And Job Creation

Residents living in Edina Traditional Area in the Edina Eguafo-Abrem Municipality of the Central Region, joined by a local social pressure group, called ” Edinaman Citizenry Group” staged a protest at the Municipal Court forecourt.

Their demand: full disclosure and accountability from the Edina Traditional Council regarding proceeds from the sale and leasing of the community’s natural resources over the past 27 years.

According to the residents allege that significant funds have been received by the traditional council from investors who acquired key assets, including the Edinaman Salt Industry at Ayisa, Edina State Land at Ayisa leased to CG Limited Company, and Edina State Land at Council Lane leased to VULUUX Company.

Despite these transactions, the community claims there has been little to no visible development or job creation, and that the proceeds have benefited only a select few.

Addressing the media after the protest, Mensah Tete, a leader of the social pressure group, appealed to Omanhene Nana Kodwo Conduah VI and his sub-chiefs to render a transparent account of their stewardship regarding the town’s natural resources.

Prior to this protest, numerous petitions were submitted to our traditional leaders; however, they have declined to convene a meeting with us, as confirmed to the press.

He further called for the Omanhene to recuse himself from the upcoming Edina Bakatue Festival scheduled for July 2025 until he provides a full account to the people

Protesters also highlighted worsening sanitation issues, particularly the lack of public toilet facilities in many Edina communities.

This shortage according to us, they say, has led to increased open defecation, especially in areas close to the beach, with little intervention from the traditional council.

The group urged the Omanhene to allocate proceeds from the town’s natural resources toward the construction of much-needed sanitation facilities.
