Western Region Reactivates Mpox Emergency Response As Maternal Deaths Spike

The Western Region Health Directorate has reactivated its public health emergency response team following aq surge in Mpox cases and a worrying increase in maternal deaths.
Between January and May 2025, the region recorded 25 maternal deaths—surpassing figures from the same period in 2024.
Speaking at the Western Region Development Retreat, Chief Pharmacist of the Regional Health Directorate, Kwadwo Okyere Apenteng, disclosed that the region has reported 187 suspected and 43 confirmed Mpox cases.
These account for 71 percent of the country’s 107 confirmed cases, with Tarkwa Nsuaem recording the highest number. He added that nine out of the region’s 14 districts have been affected.
Apenteng also expressed deep concern over the rise in maternal deaths, citing delayed antenatal care, late referrals, and poor road conditions as the main factors behind the fatalities.
In a related call to action, Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson appealed to the Regional House of Chiefs to advocate for improved healthcare infrastructure.
He particularly emphasized the urgent need to upgrade the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital to better serve the growing population.
