The Kwahu Afram Plains South district in Eastern Region is facing significant challenges in healthcare delivery due to a severe shortage of health workers and inadequate logistics.
With only 14 midwives on board, compared to the required 40, the district’s healthcare facilities are struggling to provide quality services to over 30,000 residents in the district.
According to Kwadwo Owusu Ansah, the District Health Director, the shortage of health workers, particularly midwives, is affecting the quality of care provided to patients.
Insufficient medical supplies and equipment further exacerbate the challenges.
Mr Owusu Ansah stated that ,due to the bad roads and lack of accommodations for the health workers ,they resist postings to the district thus mounting pressure on the dedicated workers there.
He therefore appealed for more workers to enhance quality health care.
The District Health Director emphasized that upgrading healthcare facilities and logistics could improve the overall quality of healthcare services.
Kwadwo Owusu Ansah stated this after a recent visit by the UNICEF Ghana Country Director, Osama Makkawi Khogali who highlighted the need for support to address these challenges.
UNICEF has therefore promised to take necessary steps to reduce the challenges faced by the district, particularly in children’s access to quality healthcare and education.
