Local Accountability Network (LANET), an auxiliary of Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, in conjunction with Codesult Focal Organization, held a forum at Otoo Memorial School( Bibiani) and Kwamekrom JHS, respectively, to commemorate African Union Anti-Corruption Day (AUACD).
In his opening remarks, Mr. John Ntori, a focal person of the organization, reiterated that the African Union Anti-corruption Day is observed annually on July 11, to promote transparency, accountability, and reaffirm commitment to the Union’s Convention on preventing and combating corruption.
He continued that in Ghana, anti-corruption agencies like the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) observe the day through public education and community engagement by empowering young people to take action against corruption in their schools, communities, and beyond.
Mr. Ntori bemoaned that the youth are among the hardest hit by corruption in Ghana. “This practice limits their access to education, job opportunities, and fair public services,” he maintained.
The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition was lauded for sensitizing a considerable number of people through its local Accountability Networks in 2024.
He disclosed that this year, Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, with support from Hewlett Foundation, is expanding its coverage to 40 districts in Ghana with a continued focus on empowering young people to take action through civic participation, whistleblowing, and a commitment to resist, reject, and report corruption.
In both events, Mr. Eric Ntiamoah Boateng, the Municipal Director for the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) facilitated the programme through participatory and interactive techniques.
He walked the participants through the meaning and types of corruption and the essence of fighting corruption.
Other essential topics discussed were Whistleblowing, the Whistleblowers Act, the Witness Protection Act, and the role of the youth in combating corruption.
The Headmaster of Otoo Memorial School, Mr. Oppong Ening Alexander, expressed appreciation to the organizers and the facilitators for a good job done, stating that it was a testament to the fact that Ghana, in particular, and the African Union at large are poised to combat corruption, which has become a social canker.
High-profile dignitaries at the function were: Nana Ago Saah II, Sanaahemaa, Anhwiaso Traditional Council, Mr. Ebenezer Somiah, Focal person, LANET, Mr Godfred Ampaw, Evaluation Officer, Codesult and Mr. David Ntori, Headmaster Kwamemkrom, M/A JHS.
