The President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Kobina Nketsia, has called on government to use the ongoing amendments consultations of the Minerals Policy to give a reason for persons living in mineral rich communities not do galamsey.

The Paramount Chief of Essikado Traditional Area who was speaking during a consultation meeting in Sekondi on the proposed amendments to the Minerals Policy with Chiefs from the Wassa Amenfi and Fiase areas with the Western Regional House of Chiefs, commended government for the consultations at this time but said it present an opportunity to reset how mining impacted communities also benefit from mining hence advised.

Also present at the meeting was Dr. Tony Aubynn, CEO of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, who emphasized in an interview with our reporter, Nana Fynn, that the current mineral laws do not adequately favor host communities.

Dr. Aubynn strongly advocated for a revision of the lease period, describing the existing 30-year mining lease as excessive and calling for a significant reduction in the new policy.
