Chief Calls For President To Declare State Of Emergency On Illegal Mining

Nana Omari Boabeng, Ankobeahene of Akyem Nanapa, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency on illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, in their community.

Akyem Nanapa, a farming community with a population of approximately 3,000, is facing significant challenges due to galamsey activities.

Galamsey activities have taken over the community, destroying water bodies and roads leading to farms.

The community can no longer access their farms, resulting in rotting farm products and potential food insecurity.

Teenage pregnancy in school children has also been linked to the presence of galamsey operators.

The Ankobeahene of Akyem Nanapa Nana Omari Buabeng call is not isolated, as other organizations and individuals have also urged the government to take decisive action against galamsey

Some experts suggest that declaring a state of emergency could be a step towards addressing the issues.
