Five Arrested In Galamsey Crackdown At Wassa East Community Demands Stronger Action

Five notorious illegal miners have been arrested by the Western Regional Police Command during a major anti-galamsey operation in the Wassa East District of the Western Region, particularly in the Wassa Dormama area.

The hours-long operation saw fierce resistance, as the illegal miners clashed with security personnel. While five suspects were arrested, several others managed to flee the scene.

Abusuapanyin of Wassa Dormama, Sylvestre Nti, commended the police for their swift action, noting that the community had long suffered from the destruction caused by such activities.

“We have endured so much at the hands of these illegal miners. Their activities have destroyed our farms and polluted our water bodies. We are grateful to the police for this operation.”

Committee Member of Wassa Dormama, Wisdom Adeka, also called on the government to ensure the prosecution of the suspects, stressing that this was not the first time such offenders had been arrested and returned to the community.

“When these people are released, they come back to threaten us, especially those who provide information to security agencies. They even use heavy weapons, making it dangerous for us.
