Angry Youth Set Suspected Thieves’ Car Ablaze Over Alleged Livestock Theft At Assin Kyeliku

Angry youth at Assin Kyeliku in the Assin South District of the Central Region have set ablaze a Mitsubishi saloon car believed to belong to a group of suspected goat thieves.

The dramatic incident unfolded after the residents discovered what they believed to be stolen livestock in the vehicle.

At around 8:30 a.m., Kwaku Yeboah, a 62-year-old man from Cape Coast, reported to the police that he was attacked earlier that morning, around 6:30 a.m., while traveling from Nyankumasi Ahenkro to Cape Coast.

According to his statement, he was driving a Mitsubishi saloon car with registration number GE 6702-13 along the Nyankumasi Ahenkro–Abakrampa feeder road.

Upon reaching Assin Kyeliku, approximately 10 kilometers from Nyankumasi Ahenkro, he claimed he was confronted by a group of young men who eventually torched his vehicle.

A police team led by ASP Richard Arku Mensah quickly responded and proceeded to the scene, which was located about half a kilometre from the village.

Upon arrival, the officers found the vehicle completely burnt beyond recognition. Not far from the scene, they discovered five slaughtered sheep, three dead goats, and two live goats tied to a tree.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Kwaku Yeboah was not alone.

He was traveling with two accomplices, identified only as Ekow and Kwabena, both reportedly known in Cape Coast.

The livestock in the vehicle is believed to have been stolen from Sekyere, a suburb of Nyankumasi Ahenkro.

Reports indicate that when their vehicle broke down near Assin Kyeliku, some villagers approached to offer help.

However, upon further questioning and suspicion, the community members realized the animals were likely stolen and responded by setting the car on fire.

The residents’ action stems from the rampant stealing of livestock and other homegrown animals in the area, which has heightened tensions and community vigilance.

While Kwaku Yeboah was arrested at the scene, his two accomplices fled and remain at large.

No arrest has been made regarding the youth who set the vehicle ablaze, but police investigations are ongoing.
