The Oti Region’s Nkwanta North District has reported its first confirmed case of mpox, a viral disease that’s sparked global health concerns amid a rising number of cases worldwide.
District Health Director Eric Kojo Agboka announced the confirmation during a press briefing aimed at informing the public and addressing fears about the outbreak.
The individual who tested positive had recently traveled from the Accra Konkomba market and showed symptoms consistent with mpox, leading to prompt medical evaluation and testing that confirmed the diagnosis.
The District Health Director stressed the importance of public awareness about mpox transmission and symptoms, urging anyone experiencing unusual symptoms to seek medical care.
District Chief Executive Isaiah Dordoe emphasized the need for community cooperation in managing the outbreak, encouraging residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious symptoms to health authorities.
Health officials have begun contact tracing and are conducting public education campaigns to raise awareness about mpox symptoms and prevention measures.
The Nkwanta North District Health Directorate is closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular updates to the public.
Mpox is a zoonotic viral infection that can spread from animals to humans and between people, causing symptoms like fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, which can lead to serious complications in some cases.
