Chief Leads Crackdown On Galamsey, Burns Several Chanfang Machines

As part of growing efforts to combat illegal mining, the Chief of Assin Dansame, Dr. Nana Okofo Twum Barima V, has taken bold steps to clamp down on galamsey operations in the Assin North District of the Central Region.

Accompanied by some sub-chiefs and national security operatives, the traditional leader toured active illegal mining sites in communities such as Assin Amankanim, Ayitey, and Dansame, where he witnessed firsthand And devastating impact of galamsey on farmlands and water bodies, including Rivers Fum and Pra.

In a decisive move, several chanfang machines and mining equipment were seized and set ablaze as a warning to others engaged in similar illegal activities.

Speaking to the media, Nana Okofo Twum Barima V expressed disappointment that the area, which had no history of galamsey, is now under threat due to the actions of illegal miners, some of whom allegedly operate with the support of a few queen mothers.

He stated that his actions were inspired by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s strong stance against illegal mining, adding that chiefs must lead the charge in protecting their lands and people.

“I will not sit and watch a few greedy individuals destroy our lands and water sources,” he declared.

The chief also commended President John Dramani Mahama for his initiatives to tackle illegal mining and called on other traditional rulers to emulate such leadership.

He urged miners to adopt legal and sustainable mining practices to help preserve natural resources and protect the livelihoods of future generations.

End.
