The TUC says it will soon put in measures that would force authorities to do everything possible to end illegal mining in the country.

This came to light when the executive body of TUC paid a working visit to t hee kwenyako water treatment plant to have first hand information following a recent shutdown by the Ghana water company due to gallamsey activities.

TUC, Ghana’s largest labour union during a fact-finding visit to the Kwanyako Headworks in the Central Region.

The visit followed the recent reopening of the plant, which had been forced to shut down due to extreme turbidity levels in the water that led to the destruction of parts of accessories used for the treatment of water for supply.

Addressing the press on Friday, October 10, during the tour, the TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah described the situation as seriously troubling noting that the pollution from galamsey is pushing some treatment plants to collapse.

Joseph Ansah urged President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency to confront the crisis head-on, cautioning that the TUC may be forced to take a drastic action if the government fails to respond.

He further indicated that TUC leadership would convene after completing a nationwide inspection of water treatment facilities to determine the next course of action.

Some residents who met the leadership of the TUC doing a tour of the wate plant, commended the TUC for the bold step and called for action to help end the menace.
