Pursue All Those Behind The Asemko Clashes- Western Regional Minister Orders Police

The Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, has directed the police to pursue and arrest all individuals involved in the violent chieftaincy clashes that erupted between Asemko and Butre in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region.

During his visit to the devastated Asemko community, Hon. Nelson described the incident as criminal and most unfortunate, emphasizing that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands.

He said anybody who wants to take the law into their own hands to exact what they think is their right will be pursued. Those involved in this act of illegality and criminality will have to be apprehended.

The police are already pursuing them, and the government will follow through to send a strong signal to others who might be preparing to do similar things in the future.

The minister confirmed that the violence, which led to the beheading of one person and the burning of about 80 percent of houses in Asemko, was a reprisal attack following an earlier assault on the community’s chief.

Hon. Nelson also expressed deep concern over the growing number of unresolved chieftaincy disputes in the municipality, noting that the Ahanta Traditional Council, which should be addressing such matters, is not in the best of shapes.

The president of the western regional traditional council Nana Kobina Nketsiah who accompanied the minister urged the police and the military not to neglect the criminal aspect of the issue.

The municipal chief executive of Ahanta west Hon. Ebenezer Aidoo on his part has assured residents affected by the recent displacement that the Assembly is working tirelessly to provide relief and restore normalcy.
