Mahama Announces 2026 Weight Restriction Policy To Protect Roads Under “Big Push” Initiative

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that a stringent weight restriction policy will be implemented in 2026 to protect road investments and ensure the longevity of newly constructed infrastructure.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the dualization of the 73.6-kilometer Takoradi-Cape Coast road, the President emphasized that the Western Region is a key beneficiary of the government’s ambitious “Big Push” infrastructure initiative.
According to World Bank reports, Ghana faces an infrastructure funding gap of approximately $1.5 billion annually.
To address this challenge, the current administration has launched a five-year program dubbed the “Big Push” initiative.
This initiative includes a $2 billion annual investment aimed at closing the infrastructure gap, boosting productivity, and driving economic growth.
Despite being a major economic hub, the Western Region suffers from largely deteriorated road networks.
Addressing this imbalance, President Mahama reaffirmed that the region would receive major attention under the “Big Push.”
To preserve the new road infrastructure and ensure sustainability, President Mahama also announced that a strict weight restriction policy will be enforced beginning in 2026,
In related developments, the President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Essikado Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, lauded the initiative.
He also proposed the use of barges to transport heavy loads as a way to prevent damage to road infrastructure.
