Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital Facilities In Crisis,Chief’s Calls On Vice-President For Help

The Paramount Chief of Twifoman Traditional Area,of the Twifo-hemang Lower Denkyira District in the Central Region, Otumfuo Sasaraku IV, has voiced deep concerns about the deteriorating condition of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital in the area.

[Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital was established in 1965 by Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, with a plan to be a 500-bed facility.

It was built to decongest existing mental health facilities and improve access to care in the central and northern parts of the country.

Its establishment also aimed to promote a more compassionate view of mental illnes.

Speaking at the hospital’s 60th anniversary celebrations, the Paramount Chief highlighted the urgent need to address the poor state of the hospital’s buildings and surrounding infrastructure.

However,he described the entrance roads as poorly maintained and some ward buildings as cracked, unpainted, and long overdue for renovation.

Otumfuo Sasaraku IV described the current state of the hospital as a disgrace, emphasizing that such vital healthcare facilities deserve better treatment.

He assured the hospital management, to engage with the President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs to arrange a meeting with the Vice President Prof Naana Opoku Agyemang, who hails from the region to assist to improve the hospital’s facilities and infrastructure.

The Acting Medical Director for the Facilities, Dr Julius Xatse stated that the hospital has successfully attained its objectives.

He further confirmed that the facility is currently experiencing an increase in mental health cases originating from the central region compared to other regions.

Therefore, commended the hospital staff for their dedication despite the challenges faced by the facilities, however, appeals for additional assistance to support the hospital.

Central Regional Minister, Hon. Ekow Panyin Okyere,speaking on behalf of the Vice President, has pledged to address and support the challenges that have been identified.

Furthermore,Minister, took the opportunity to urge the general public to take sanitation issues seriously.

In his conclusion,Mr. Okyere appeal to individuals to assist those on the streets who are experiencing mental instability.
