Assin Dompim Murder Court Orders Accused To Undergo Psychiatric Evaluation

The Assin Fosu District Court has ordered that 19-year-old Shadrack Kwame Gyamfi, standing trial for the murder of 57-year-old Adwoa Attaa at Assin Dompim in the Assin Fosu Municipality of the Central Region, be sent to a psychiatric hospital for a comprehensive mental health assessment.

Presiding Judge His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu explained that the psychiatric report will help determine the accused’s mental state and capacity at the time of the alleged offence which is very critical for the trial.

The sad incident occurred yesterday, 3rd November 2025, around 5 pm.

The prosecution stated that the accused admitted to strangling the deceased after she allegedly refused to give him GH¢100 to buy food.

Chief Inspector Abagna Anyongo, the Prosecutor, explained that the accused Shadrack Gyamfi dragged the deceased from the corridor into her room, after pushing her against the wall, which rendered her unconscious, before strangling her to death to conceal the act.

The accused, who is the nephew of the deceased, was apprehended shortly after the body was discovered, showing signs of strangulation, bruising, and other injuries, prompting an intensive police investigation.

The court has, therefore, remanded the accused into police custody for 16 days, and he is scheduled to reappear on 20th November 2025.

The psychiatric evaluation is expected to provide critical insights into whether Gyamfi was mentally sound at the time of the crime, and further proceedings have been adjourned pending the submission of the report.
