Tension At Assin Swedru Akuapem As Angry Residents Threaten To Burn Police Station Over Death Of Suspect In Police Custody

Tensions are running high in Assin Swedru Akuapem, in the Assin Fosu Municipality of the Central Region, following the death of a 40-year-old man, George Anim, who allegedly died while in police custody at Twifo Praso.

According to residents, George Anim was arrested on Tuesday, 25th November 2025, by the Assin Awisam Police for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl.

He was transferred to the Twifo Praso District Police Command the next day for further processing and court appearance.

However, on Friday, the family received a call from the police informing them of his death and that his body had been deposited at the Twifo Praso Government Hospital mortuary without the family’s consent.

Outraged by the news, some youth in the community have threatened to burn down the police station, claiming there is foul play involved in the suspect’s death.

According to Nana Larbi Dankwa, a family elder, they had attempted to secure bail for George Anim on Thursday, but their request was denied.

He added that upon viewing the body, the family observed blood stains and bruises, raising suspicions about possible abuse while in custody.

The family is calling for a full-scale investigation.

In response, the Central North Regional Police Commander, DCOP Abraham Acquaye, described the situation as unfortunate.

He confirmed that the IGP has dispatched a delegation to visit the bereaved family and offer condolences.

He assured the public that a thorough and transparent investigation would be carried out and anyone found culpable would face the full rigour of the law.

As part of initial steps, he and the Regional Crime Officer visited the scene and engaged with community members, urging calm as investigations continue.
