Ghana Records 334,721 Hiv Cases In 2024, Women Record Highest As Stigma Fuels New Infections

The National AIDS and STI Control Programme has disclosed that Ghana recorded 334,721 HIV cases in 2024, with women accounting for 68.5% of all infections — a trend that underscores the urgent need for targeted, women-centered prevention and care initiatives.

According to the Programme, out of the total number of people living with HIV, 229,261 are females, while 105,460 are males.

Speaking at a media engagement to commemorate the World AIDS Day, Acting Programme Manager, Dr. Emmanuel Teviu, warned that persistent stigma and discrimination continue to fuel new infections across the country.

He noted with concern that Ghana is recording 42 new HIV infections every day, a situation he describes as “deeply worrying.”

He stressed the need for stronger national coordination and stakeholder collaboration, particularly to protect young people between the ages of 15 and 24, who remain highly vulnerable.

Dr. Teviu* further disclosed that only 68% of people living with HIV in Ghana know their status, a figure far below the UNAIDS 95% target.

He identified stigma and discrimination as the biggest barriers preventing people from getting tested and seeking treatment, and urged the public to support persons living with HIV to help reduce the spread of the virus.
