EKMA Boss Calls For Waste Segregation As New Sanitation Policy Takes Off

The Effia–Kwasimintsim Municipal Chief Executive, Abdul Majeed Dukrugu, has called on residents of the municipality to segregate their waste as the Assembly rolls out a new sanitation policy aimed at reducing the cost of waste management.

The policy, dubbed the EKMA Sanitation Initiative, was officially launched at the Apremdo Central Market, where the Assembly engaged market women and traders to sensitize them on proper waste disposal practices.

As part of the initiative, EKMA has deployed 10 tricycles to collect plastic waste directly from homes and markets.

Mr. Dukrugu explained that residents who separate their waste will benefit from the free collection of plastic waste, which will be sent for recycling.

According to the MCE, plastics account for the largest portion of rubbish generated in the Effia–Kwasimintsim Municipality and remain a major cause of sanitation challenges, including choked drains and environmental pollution.

He noted that by focusing on plastic waste segregation and recycling, the Assembly will be able to cut down the high cost of refuse collection while improving cleanliness across the municipality.

Mr. Dukrugu urged residents to cooperate with the Assembly and the tricycle operators to ensure the success of the policy, stressing that sanitation is a shared responsibility.
