Tension At Assin Chiano As Queen Mother Is Destooled Over Galamsey, Insubordination, And Other Offences

There is growing tension at Assin Chiano in the Assin North District of the Central Region following the destoolment of the Queen Mother, Nana Abena Kyeiwaa II, by the kingmakers of the community over a series of serious allegations.

The queen mother is accused of engaging in illegal mining (galamsey), which has led to the destruction of farmlands and water bodies in the area.

Other accusations include a lack of accountability to the community and traditional leadership, installing an unauthorized chief, disobeying directives from the Paramount Chief, fostering insecurity through the activities of landguards and thugs who reportedly fire sporadically in the town, and general insubordination.

The Krontihene of Assin Chiano, Nana Perkoh Akwasi Awuah Gyetua, told the media after the traditional destoolment rites that the actions of Nana Kyeiwaa breached the customs and threatened the peace of the community.

He emphasized that traditional leaders must be law-abiding and committed to safeguarding communal lands and waterbodies.

He further explained that there is an existing, legitimate chief in the community, and any attempt to impose another amounts to chieftaincy confusion and security threats.

As part of the traditional rites, the Atandansu Traditional Council received a symbolic portion of a slaughtered sheep, signifying the formal acceptance of the queen mother’s removal from the stool.

Some community members were seen jubilating following the announcement, expressing relief and hope that her removal would restore peace and allow development to thrive.

According to them, the queen mothers leadership stalled progress, with the community lacking basic amenities such as water, sanitation facilities, and schools.
