Assin Dompim Murder Court Declares Suspect Mentally Fit To Stand Trial

The Assin Fosu District Court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, has ruled that the accused in the Assin Dompim murder case is mentally fit to stand trial.

The decision follows a psychiatric assessment conducted on 19-year-old Shadrack Gyamfi, who is standing trial for the alleged murder of his 57-year-old aunt, Adwoa Ataa, in November 2025.

Presenting the case, the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Gilbert Anyongo, told the court that a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation carried out by a consultant at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital had confirmed that the accused is of sound mind and capable of understanding the court proceedings.

In view of the development, the court adjourned the case to 9th January 2026 to enable the prosecution to complete the necessary processes, including forwarding the case docket to the Attorney-General’s Department for advice.

The accused remains in lawful custody and has been provisionally charged with murder.

Background

Shadrack Gyamfi was arrested on 3rd November 2025 following the alleged killing of his aunt at her residence in Assin Dompim.

Police investigations indicate that the accused allegedly admitted to the act after the deceased refused to give him GH₵100 to buy food.

Prosecutors earlier told the court that Gyamfi allegedly pushed the deceased against a wall, causing her to lose consciousness, before dragging her into a room where he strangled her in an attempt to conceal the crime.

The victim’s body was later discovered with signs of strangulation and multiple bruises, leading to the swift arrest of the suspect.
