Atiwa East Municipal Chief Executive, Ernest Ntim, Has Been Sentenced To Eight Days In Prison By The Koforidua High Court 2

Atiwa East Municipal Chief Executive, Ernest Ntim, has been sentenced to eight days in prison by the Koforidua High Court 2 for contempt of court related to illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, on protected land in the Eastern Region.

The court found Ntim guilty of destroying farmlands, polluting the Koben River, and contaminating a key water source serving several communities.

The court initially imposed an eight-day jail sentence but later commuted it to a fine of GH¢15,000. Ntim was cited for contempt after allegedly continuing galamsey activities despite a pending injunction application before the court.

The ruling highlights the judiciary’s strong stance against illegal mining and environmental degradation, particularly when public officials are involved.

The Atiwa area has become a hotspot for galamsey, causing widespread environmental damage and threatening local livelihoods.
