Five Arrested In NAIMOS Crackdown On Birim River

Five individuals, including Chinese nationals, were arrested yesterday in a crackdown on illegal mining activities around the Birim River in Ghana’s Eastern Region.

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) conducted the operation, seizing two excavators, a Toyota Hilux, and a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Makeshift structures, water pumps, and other mining equipment were also destroyed.

This operation is part of NAIMOS’s ongoing efforts to protect Ghana’s water bodies from pollution and environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

The authorities have warned of stricter enforcement and community cooperation to clamp down on illegal mining.
