Assin Darmang Cybercrime Unit Nabs Momo Fraudster Over GH¢40,000 Scam

The Cybercrime Unit of the Ghana Police Service in Assin Fosu has arrested a 20-year-old suspect, Frederick Doomson, for allegedly defrauding a Mobile Money (MoMo) vendor at Assin Asamankese to the tune of GH¢40,000.

According to the Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Gregory Gyakye, the fraudsters used a deceptive tactic by calling the vendor and pretending to be a colleague MoMo operator.

They mentioned the name of a familiar business associate to gain her trust and then requested a transfer of GH¢40,000 to a number they provided.

Trusting the caller, the unsuspecting vendor sent the money, only to later realise she had been defrauded. The matter was promptly reported to the Cybercrime Unit of the Central North Regional Police Command.

Following a swift intelligence-led operation, the police arrested Frederick Doomson, who claimed to reside at Assin Darmang in the Assin South District. During interrogation, he confessed to receiving GH¢4,440 as his share of the fraudulent transaction.

Two other accomplices are currently on the run and are being actively pursued by the police.

Hon. Gregory Gyakye, speaking to Angel News, praised the efficiency and dedication of the Cybercrime Unit despite the logistical challenges they face.

“This is not the first time they’ve delivered. I personally witnessed their professionalism when they tracked and arrested fraudsters who defrauded me of GH¢95,000 within just a week,” he stated.

He appealed to the public and authorities to support the unit with the necessary resources to enhance their operations and combat cyber-related crimes effectively.

He also urged MoMo vendors and the general public to exercise caution when conducting electronic transactions, emphasising the need for due diligence to avoid falling victim to fraud.
