Amenfi Water Guards Launches Crackdown On Illegal Mining At River Ankobra……2IC Mr Alex AnimahMaster Peace

The Amenfi East Water Guards taskforce has begun a serious operation to curb illegal mining activities on the River Ankobra.

The operation, which started on January 8, 2026, aims to protect the river and its surrounding environment from the devastating effects of galamsey.

According to reports, the taskforce destroyed approximately 10 totooto machines dredging chanfang platforms, water pumping machines, and several temporary structures erected by illegal miners at Ankosia,Ankwagya and Asikuma-Mensakrom in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region.

The team also removed and destroyed multiple pipelines connected to the Ankobra River, which were discharging mining residue into the water, causing pollution.

The operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and protect Ghana’s water bodies.

In an interview with the Commander Peace, The team have been working alongside security agencies to provide local intelligence and sustained monitoring to prevent reoccupation by illegal miners.

Mr Alex Animah continued that a lot of operations are going to be take in place in this year so the illegal miners should get ready for them.

The Ankobra River has been severely impacted by illegal mining, prompting intensified monitoring and community-led patrols to address the environmental damage.

The government has designated galamsey a national security threat, requiring coordinated multi-agency responses.
