Don’t Rely Solely On Your Degrees, Acquire Extra Skills To Combat Graduate Unemployment’ – Methodist Superintendent Minister Urges Youth

The Superintendent Minister for the Dormaa Circuit of the Methodist Church, Very Reverend Nicholas Afrifa, has cautioned the youth against over-reliance on academic qualifications, urging them to acquire practical skills to avoid the trap of long-term unemployment.

Speaking in an interview with this reporter following a Covenant Sunday Service at the Dormaa Wesley Methodist Church, Very Rev. Afrifa observed that the number of unemployed graduates continues to multiply because many students focus strictly on their degrees with the hope of securing limited government jobs.

“Unemployed graduates are increasing in number. This is because everyone wants to work in a government department after school, but we all know that is very difficult,” he stated.

Addressing the youth as a matter of urgency, the Minister advised them to diversify their capabilities to become more versatile and productive in a competitive job market.

“I advise the youth to add more skills to their specialized areas.

If your course does not fetch you a job immediately after school, you should be able to do something else for yourself. You don’t have to rely on only one career path,” he noted.

Practicing what he preaches, Very Rev. Afrifa shared his personal experience as a multi-skilled professional.

“I am a Reverend Minister, but that is not the only thing I do.

I have added farming and other trades. Recently, I joined a job training course with Super A1, which has helped me a lot.

I rear animals and engage in farming. Even if you get a job based on your degree, you can still handle extra work because you learned something aside from your main course.”

End.
