Ghanaians Expect Discipline And Fare Reduction After Govt-GPRTU Meeting

Ghanaians are holding their breath ahead of today’s meeting between the government and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and some transport operators, hoping for a reduction in transport fares and improved discipline among drivers.

The meeting is expected to address issues such as unapproved fare hikes, artificial vehicle shortages, and drivers loading passengers for short distances and charging exorbitant fares.

Passengers in the Ashanti Region have been vocal about their frustrations, citing difficulties in accessing commercial vehicles and being forced to pay extra due to drivers’ conduct.

The government has condemned the practice of creating artificial scarcity to drive up prices, and the GPRTU has announced plans to deploy taskforces to monitor compliance and sanction erring drivers.

Ghanaians are expecting the meeting to yield positive results, with many calling for an end to the practice of loading passengers for short distances and charging huge amounts of money.

They are also hoping for improved discipline among drivers and a reduction in transport fares to reflect prevailing economic conditions.

Speaking to media, stranded passengers appealed to the sector minister and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene and address the growing challenge.
