Government Boosts Chiefs’ Allowances To Tackle Chieftaincy Disputes

The Ghanaian government has increased the quarterly adjudication allowance for traditional authorities from GH¢30,000 to GH¢50,000, effective April 1, 2026.

This 66.7% rise aims to enhance the capacity of Houses of Chiefs to resolve chieftaincy disputes and clear long-standing cases.

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, announced the increase during a visit to the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, citing President John Dramani Mahama’s “Reset Agenda” to stabilize communities and empower traditional leaders as mediators.

The government has also increased monthly allowances for Paramount Chiefs by 300% to GH¢3,000 and Queen Mothers to GH¢2,400, to support peace and stability. The move is part of a wider support programme for traditional authorities.

The Minister also briefed chiefs on the 24-Hour Model Market initiative, aiming to boost local trade and employment opportunities.

Chiefs welcomed the allowance increase, praising it as a timely intervention to revive judicial committees and support development projects in the Volta Region.

End.
