CDAG Calls On Inspector-General Of Police To Address Alleged Extortion And Intimidation On The Accra–Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (CDAG), Central Regional Chapter, wishes to express its deep concern over the increasing reports of alleged extortion, intimidation, and unprofessional conduct by some police officers mounted along the Accra–Cape Coast–Takoradi highway.
The rate at which commercial and private drivers are reportedly harassed under the guise of routine checks has become alarming and unacceptable.
Drivers have complained of frequent stops, unnecessary delays, intimidation, and demands for money, which have gradually become normalized at some police checkpoints along the highway.
Of particular concern are several complaints from drivers about the conduct of an officer who identifies himself as Corporal Bless Attipoe, claiming to be from the Winneba Police Command.
Drivers allege that his manner of engagement is intimidating and that demands for money are made without justifiable cause.
We stress that these are allegations raised by drivers and therefore call for a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the facts.
The Central Regional Chairman of CDAG is therefore calling on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Ghana Police Service hierarchy to urgently intervene by:
Investigating the reported conduct of officers along the highway.
Calling officers involved to order and enforcing professional standards.
Strengthening monitoring and supervision of police checkpoints.
Protecting drivers from harassment while ensuring road safety and law enforcement.
CDAG fully supports lawful policing and recognizes the vital role of the police in maintaining safety on our roads.
However, the alleged acts of extortion and intimidation undermine public trust, worsen the hardship of drivers, and negatively affect transport costs and the general economy.
We urge the Police Administration to act decisively to restore confidence and ensure that policing on our highways reflects integrity, professionalism, and service to the public.
