Deputy Agric Minister Appeals For Calm Among Cocoa Farmers, Promises Better Producer Price Next Year.

Cocoa farmers across Ghana have been urged to remain patient as government works to improve conditions in the cocoa sector, with assurances of a possible producer price increase next year.

The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, made the appeal at Nkawkaw during the launch of an agricultural mechanization programme by Captains Tractors.

The event also featured an engagement session with cocoa farmers.

Speaking to the farmers, the Deputy Minister acknowledged concerns about the current cocoa producer price and the difficulties it poses to livelihoods.

He assured them that government is committed to reviewing the price next year to reflect improved global market conditions and the hard work of farmers.

According to him, discussions are ongoing with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Cocoa Board, to ensure cocoa farmers receive a fair share of proceeds from exports.

He further addressed concerns raised by farmers in the Kwahu Afram Plains area regarding the destruction of crops by Fulani herdsmen.

The Deputy Minister indicated that government is putting measures in place to address the issue and bring lasting relief to affected farmers.
He also commended Captains Tractors for their support in promoting mechanized farming in Kwahu.

Meanwhile, the Kwahuhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, appealed to the Deputy Minister to intensify efforts to curb the destruction of crops by herdsmen.

He called for strict enforcement measures, including ensuring cattle owners make use of designated fodder banks, to protect farmlands and boost agricultural productivity in Kwahu.
End.
