Cargo Truck Union Cries Foul Over Eviction Move, Demand Dedicated Parking Space In Tema.

The National Union of Trailer and Cargo Truck Drivers has raised concerns over what it describes as attempts by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to evict its members from their current parking spaces in Tema.

According to the Union, an agreement was reached with the GPHA in 2001 to increase toll fees paid by members in exchange for the provision of a designated truck park.

However, more than two decades later, the Union claims the promised facility has not been delivered despite the upward adjustment in toll charges.

The drivers say the situation has worsened in recent weeks, with authorities allegedly locking up trucks at their current parking locations as part of efforts to eject them from the area.

National Chairman of the Union, Wahab Yaba, made these remarks at the official launch of the Association in Tema.

He explained that the formation of the Union is intended to create a structured platform through which members can be heard, protected and empowered, while promoting professionalism, cooperation and development within the cargo transport industry.

Mr. Yaba rejected suggestions that drivers deliberately park along roads and cause congestion, insisting that the practice is a consequence of the absence of a designated parking facility.

He appealed to government to intervene and allocate land for the construction of a permanent truck park to address the longstanding challenge.

The Member of Parliament for Tema East, Isaac Ashai Odamtten, acknowledged the concerns of the drivers, describing the lack of a planned truck parking terminal in the municipality as long overdue for attention.

He pledged to engage relevant stakeholders and lobby for the establishment of a dedicated parking space for cargo truck operators.

Meanwhile, Planning Manager at the National Road Safety Authority, Felix Owusu, urged drivers to adhere strictly to road safety regulations.

He emphasized the importance of observing safety precautions to protect lives and property on the roads.
