Salaga South MP Celebrates Women’s Achievements And Calls For Action On Gender Equality.

The Member of Parliament for Salaga South Constituency, Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has called for concrete actions to address gender inequality, stating that issues concerning women and gender remain prominent because society has yet to achieve true parity.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, March 5, 2026, the lawmaker emphasized that leaders including Members of Parliament, community leaders, and government officials must move beyond annual discussions on gender issues and take practical steps to promote equity and empower women.

According to her, many successful men often tell their stories without mentioning the sacrifices made by their mothers, yet none of them would have succeeded without that support.

She noted that, in many cases, mothers sell their clothes and jewelry and make numerous sacrifices to ensure their children receive an education.

Hon. Ibrahimah stressed that women must also highlight these stories of sacrifice to inspire younger generations.

She encouraged young girls to recognize the efforts their mothers make for their education and future success.

She further stated that education remains the most important bridge between poverty and progress.

“Whether we like it or not, education is the single most important pathway between poverty and advancement,” she said, adding that it enhances exposure and provides opportunities for individuals to improve their lives.

As part of activities marking International Women’s Day, the MP congratulated Ghanaian women, particularly those who have progressed in their careers and professions.

She urged them to look back and support young girls by contributing in small but meaningful ways that can create incremental benefits for future generations.

Hon. Ibrahimah also highlighted the success story of a young woman from the Salaga South Constituency, Fatimata Alhassan.

She explained that after the young woman completed her Senior High School education, she supported her enrollment at University for Development Studies to pursue a Physician Assistant programme.

According to the MP, Fatimata later graduated with top honours and emerged as the overall best student at the university. She also became the best female student at the institution’s most recent graduation ceremony.

Hon. Ibrahimah noted that many young girls simply need guidance, encouragement, and someone willing to support them in meeting their basic needs.

“Once they receive that support, the sky becomes their limit,” she said.

She also praised Ghana’s first female Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, describing her as a strong role model for women and girls across the country. Hon. Ibrahimah noted that she once studied at University of Cape Coast, and encouraged women to continue striving for greater achievements.

She concluded by urging society to work collectively to achieve even greater progress for women and girls in Ghana.
