Salaga South Mp Commends Mahama’s Leadership, Defends Free Shs Reforms And Economic Gains.

The Member of Parliament for Salaga South Constituency, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has praised President John Dramani Mahama’s State of the Nation Address (SONA), describing it as a testament to resolute leadership, fiscal discipline, and a clear vision for national renewal.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, 4th March 2026, Hon. Ibrahimiah stated that the President’s address reflected a strong commitment to rebuilding the nation after what she described as eight years of reckless economic mismanagement, runaway debt, policy inconsistency, and hardship imposed on Ghanaians.

She expressed surprise at comments made by an unnamed Member of Parliament regarding the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

According to her, the MP in question should rather apologize to parents and students who endured challenges under the policy over the past eight years before making such remarks.

Hon. Ibrahimah argued that within just one year of President Mahama’s administration, there have been no widespread reports of students complaining about food shortages or poor-quality meals in schools.

She described this as an example of good governance anchored on prioritizing the welfare of the people.

She noted that under the previous administration, the Free SHS policy was frequently associated with strikes, press conferences by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), petitions to Parliament and the Presidency, and parents sending gari and shito to their children in schools due to food shortages.

She urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to compare its eight-year record on Free SHS to what she described as improvements achieved within one year under the current administration.

Touching on the economy, the Salaga South MP stated that inflation had previously made it difficult for Ghanaians to budget and plan, as food prices and the cost of services were unpredictable.

However, she said the situation has improved, enabling citizens to plan more effectively. She added that the Ghana cedi has stabilized under President Mahama’s leadership.

Quoting the President, she said the cedi was not “locked up,” but rather strengthened through sound fiscal and financial policies.

Hon. Ibrahimiah further gave a personal example from her constituency, noting that she previously purchased a 50kg bag of sugar for GH¢900 but bought the same quantity for GH¢500 during the current Ramadan period.

She argued that such price reductions demonstrate tangible economic improvement, insisting that claims by the Minority that nothing has changed are unfounded.

She concluded by stating that those who claim there has been no progress may not be fully aware of the realities on the ground.
