A 14-year-old JHS 1 student of Dadeben Basic School, identified as Lawrence Dogbe, has drowned in a drainage system at the teachers’ quarters, a suburb of Gomoa Nyanyano in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.

According to reports, Lawrence went swimming with two of his colleagues after school had vacated when the tragic incident occurred.

Information gathered by Opanyin Darko indicates that the two colleagues fled the scene after their friend drowned. However, one of them later reported the incident to nearby residents.

A resident, Tai Hayford, who assisted in retrieving the body, explained in an interview that the children had come to swim, but Lawrence drowned due to a deep manhole hidden in the water.

He further revealed that a nearby bridge has been left in a collapsed state for several years, turning the area into a death trap for residents.

Meanwhile, the Gomoa East District NADMO Director, Hassan Hamidu, confirmed that the deceased was a JHS 1 student of Dadeben Basic School who went swimming after school vacated.

He assured the public that the collapsed bridge will be fixed in due course to prevent future tragedies.
