Kumasi Mayor Apologises For Waste Crisis, Warns Public Against Illegal Dumping On CBD.

The Chief Executive Officer of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has issued a public apology to residents following a day of uncollected garbage across the Central Business District.
Addressing the situation, the mayor explained that heavy rainfall earlier in the week severely damaged roads leading to the city’s main waste disposal site.
As a result, waste collection trucks operated by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) were unable to access the dumping grounds.
He noted that trucks already loaded with waste could not offload at the site, preventing them from returning to town for further collection.
This disruption led to the accumulation of refuse in key commercial areas of Kumasi.
According to the mayor, emergency measures were taken on Wednesday to restore access to the dumping site.
“We managed to repair the road temporarily and began offloading the waste from the trucks.
The vehicles are now ready to resume operations and clear the garbage from the city,” he stated.
He also acknowledged that outdated equipment remains a challenge in managing waste effectively.
In a strong warning to residents, Hon Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi announced that, effective next Monday, indiscriminate dumping of waste in the Central Business District spaces will attract strict penalties. Stating that dumping refuse at the MTN roundabout, the Otumfuo roundabout, and the Children’s Hospital roundabout, alongside all dual carriage and pavements is prohibited
He stressed that offenders found dumping garbage in these areas would be prosecuted with fines or imprisonment to serve as a deterrent to others.
As a result of that, additional dustbins would be placed around the CBD to curtail the situation.
The Chief Executive Officer for Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly further called on residents to support sanitation efforts by reporting offenders to the nearest police station.
He emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in addressing the city’s sanitation challenges, stressing the need for all citizens to work together to keep Kumasi clean.
